The Effects of Exercise On Aged Skeletal Muscle
Yori Endo, MB, BChir, MPhil, BSc

We have found that physiological responses of skeletal muscles to exercise as reflected in muscle force / fatigue as well as running performance decline with aging. However, exercise has been shown to be effective in protecting and/or maintaining muscle functions in the elderly. The mechanism underlying this, however, has been unclear and it did not seem to relate to metabolic responses to exercise as seen in younger muscle. Our late RNA sequencing study has uncovered that there were significant changes in the gene expression of the components of glutaminergic transmission. As the presence, as well as the role of glutaminergic transmission at NMJs, are unknown, I will be exploring this angle in my future studies and I hope to incorporate some of the results by the conference.
